Going Up

This book is adorable! I could read it over and over again. Little Sophie is invited to Olive’s birthday party on the 10th floor. She lives on the first. Her dad and her baked her favorite cookies to bring and then make their way up the elevator to Olive’s apartment. As they are going up, the elevator stops on each floor and more friends from their complex get in. They are all headed to the birthday party and each brings something unique. We meet a diverse range of people as everyone squeezes in the elevator, including Indian and Mexican families, a lesbian couple, and Olive who is in a wheelchair.

This is such a cute book that shows representation without that being the main topic. I love how everyone knows each other and is all excited to celebrate their friend’s birthday. This book demonstrates the power of friendship and respecting one another’s differences even though it doesn’t explicitly say it which is perfect for young children.

To pair with the book we made our own elevator!
